JAPANESE STORYTELLING WITH KUNIKO
OCTOBER 2011
Japanese artist Kuniko blends charming folktales with traditional musical instruments, magical masks, origami and mime to create storytelling that will have students spellbound in their seats! Short stories carefully selected to portray the culture of Japan are performed with audience interaction and participation, and students are encouraged to compare Japanese and American tales, arts and cultural elements during a question and answer session.

THE LIVING NEWSPAPER - Mad River Theater Works
OCTOBER 2011
The Living Newspaper transports us to a time and a generation that has been forgotten… a time when life’s basic necessities were not taken for granted, and when such a thing as entertainment was valued and precious. Our country was stumbling and it became the responsibility of everyday folks to catch hold and make it right. Students will be given a glimpse of a world in dire circumstances and a time when people not only had to make do with what was, but got busy making a better life for themselves.

TALES OF FLIGHT WITH BROTHERS WRIGHT -
OCTOBER 2011
Let your imaginations soar with the amazing Wright Brothers! This high-flying adventure of hometown history is interwoven with the Greek myth of Icarus, the man who flew too close to the sun. Brothers Orville and Wilbur may have been the first to fly, but Madcap’s giant puppets will take you to new heights in this creative story filled with wings, dreams, and flying machines. And to think… it all began in a bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio!

THE GREAT KAPLAN
  JANUARY 2012

Illusion, music, juggling and comedy collide in this vaudevillesque spectacle! Inspired by the antics of Keaton, Sellers, Victor Borge, the Smothers Brothers and the illustrious Wile E. Coyote among others, “The Great” David Kaplan welcomes young and old into a wonderfully strange world they will not soon forget. Perhaps Kaplan’s most spectacular accomplishment is emerging from the performance in one piece! As his world seemingly crumbles, he manages to tame a rogue bowling ball, juggle furniture, perform feats of prestidigitation, and play melodies on “concert balloon,” turkey baster and his great grandfather’s ukulele, all to the delight of your students.

PETER AND THE WOLF
Using characters from Warner Brothers’ Looney Tunes cartoons, the talented duo of David Hepler and Will Gould present Peter and the Wolf in a jazzed up version of Prokofiev’s musical themes. Using just piano and voice, Hepler and Gould (along with Elmer, Bugs, Daffy, and others) bring new life to this classic Russian folktale. Students watch a performance of Dr. Seuss’ Gerald McBoing-Boing, about a boy who speaks only in sound effects and seeks acceptance, then learn about Sergei Prokofiev’s intention of introducing parts of the orchestra through musical themes assigned to each character. The performance concludes with a question and answer session.

UNSINKABLE WOMEN - Stories from the Titanic
Based on actual diaries, letters and interviews, Unsinkable Women brings to life famous figures from The Titanic, including Madeline Astor (teenage bride of John Jacob Astor) and Margaret Tobin Brown, the “Unsinkable Molly” herself. Characters like stewardess Violet Jessop, who tells of friendships below-deck, and Nora, an English music hall performer on her way to New York, share their stories of tragedy and triumph. New York actress Deborah Jean Templin offers vivid portrayals while changing into Edwardian-era costumes and shifting from character to character in full view of the students, in this historic program.

OSEBO’S DRUM with Robbi Kumalo
As an award-winning storyteller and trained Lincoln Center for Aesthetic Education Teaching Artist, Robbi Kumalo’s spirit is clearly contagious, and students are soon singing and clapping along with Osebo’s Drum. Drumming, movement, singing and chanting set the scene for Robbi to unfold this amusing traditional tale of the little turtle that outwits the fierce leopard and is rewarded with a shell. Robbi moves about constantly, appealing to and interacting with students as she acts out the many colorful characters.
